January 2007 newsletter

A Happy New Year to Gaffers all! Time now to think about fitting out and balmy summer days (and to think about paying subscriptions if not doing so by direct debit).

Those that attended Ian MacGillivray's bonfire party will tell you what a delightful evening this was. The Itchen made a fine setting and Ian really pulled the stops out ­ we were honoured to be invited! The December gathering at the Southampton Maritime Museum proved to be very enjoyable, with a fascinating talk about Itchen Ferry and its history, followed by a buffet supper. I gather also that the monthly pub meetings (details in the last newsletter) are going wel.

The 2007 programme is now forming and starts with the AGM and supper on 17 February at Warsash Sailing Club. We are fortunate to have Dennis Skillicorne as guest speaker so we can expect an entertaining evening. My successor, Jessica Warren, has taken control this year and you will see from the enclosed form that the menus has been given her personal touch. Please return the enclosed form to Jessica by 10 February if you intend to come. The agenda for the AGM, which will commence at 1900hrs, is:

There will again be a Photograph Competition, so please bring plenty of photographs to show off, and and a draw for a Crewsaver lifejacket.

We have seen quite a number of changes in the composition of the Area Committee in recent years, and, encouragingly, the average age has reduced considerably. We have no specific limit on the number of members so if anyone wishes to join please let myself, Tom or Jessica know, either before or at the meeting. We all think we are doing a grand job, but you may think differently.
